When French Students Meet Blue-and-White Porcelain: Writing an Oriental “Love Letter” by Hand at PITO

May 20 — a day widely associated with love and heartfelt expression in China. On this special occasion, a group of students from Paris East University visited PITO with curiosity and enthusiasm. Their purpose was not only to observe, but also to experience firsthand the intangible cultural heritage of Chaozhou blue-and-white porcelain craftsmanship. The visit became an immersive journey into Chinese ceramic culture and traditional artistry.

01 Seeing and Listening

Blue-and-White Porcelain Is More Than a “Museum Antique”

The journey began at the Chaozhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Blue-and-White Porcelain Museum — a living archive of ceramic history. From the elegance of the Tang and Song dynasties to the prosperity of the Ming and Qing periods, exquisite blue-and-white porcelain works quietly reflected centuries of craftsmanship and artistic inheritance.

As both a guardian and innovator of this heritage, PITO continues exploring ways to integrate traditional ceramic craftsmanship with modern aesthetics and contemporary design, allowing the timeless beauty of blue-and-white porcelain to be rediscovered by new generations around the world.

02 Professors Demonstrate the Art of Brush and Pigment

Understanding the Harmony Between Pigment and Water

Following the cultural introduction came a hands-on painting session. Professor Xiong and Professor Luo from the Guangdong University of Finance Art College delivered an engaging introduction to traditional hand-painting techniques. Rather than relying on lengthy theory, the professors picked up their brushes and demonstrated directly on pure white porcelain panels.

“The soul of blue-and-white porcelain lies in the rhythm of the brushwork and the interaction between pigment and water.”

As the brushes moved across the porcelain surface, soft gradients of cobalt blue spread naturally, forming elegant and expressive patterns. The demonstration offered students a vivid introduction to the artistry behind hand-painted porcelain craftsmanship.

03 The First Brushstroke

Leaving a Personal Mark on Porcelain

The students then began creating their own porcelain paintings. Under one-on-one guidance from the professors, they carefully placed their first brushstrokes onto porcelain panels. Hands trembled, pigments spread unexpectedly, yet no one gave up.

From copying simple leaf patterns to sketching original designs, every student became deeply immersed in the creative process. In that moment, they were no longer simply observers of culture, but active participants in traditional craftsmanship.

What they completed was not only a hand-painted ceramic artwork, but also a personal understanding of craftsmanship, artistic expression, and custom ceramic design.

04 A Meeting of Two Intangible Cultural Heritages

Eastern Porcelain Art Meets Italian Neapolitan Pizza

As the painting session concluded, another surprise awaited the students — authentic Neapolitan pizza, recognized as part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

Served on PITO porcelain plates, the pizza created a natural dialogue between Western cuisine and Eastern tableware artistry. Conversations about tableware aesthetics and dining presentation unfolded naturally around the table.

“It feels amazing,” one student said with a smile. “The food and the tableware complement each other perfectly.”

05 A Truly Unique Souvenir

Taking Home a One-of-a-Kind Memory

At the end of the event, every student proudly held up a completed blue-and-white porcelain painting. The brushwork may have appeared youthful and unpolished, but every line reflected sincerity and creativity. These one-of-a-kind “Oriental love letters” became meaningful souvenirs from their journey in China.

PITO believes the best way to share culture is through immersive experience — allowing young people around the world to create with their hands and connect through craftsmanship and artistic exchange.

Notably, the venue for this experience — the PITO Workshop — remains open to the public year-round. Both individual visitors and groups can experience various ceramic-making processes firsthand, from wheel throwing to blue-and-white porcelain painting, transforming imagination into unique ceramic creations. PITO believes culture is best communicated through participation — by allowing people to create by hand and experience craftsmanship directly.
