Porcelain as a Cultural Bridge: Sun Yat-sen University Students Discover Chaozhou’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

On August 17, 22 international students from the Greater Bay Area Cultural Study Program for International Chinese Students at Sun Yat-sen University visited the P&T Royal Ware Chaozhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Blue-and-White Porcelain Culture Museum. The hands-on study and exchange experience centered on Chaozhou’s intangible cultural heritage of porcelain.

The students represented more than ten countries and regions — including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, and Thailand. P&T Royal Ware designed the experience around five interconnected elements — a city, a heritage tradition, a piece of porcelain, a dining table, and an industry — inviting the students to explore Chaozhou porcelain from the perspectives of culture, craftsmanship, design, and industry, while experiencing the enduring heritage and contemporary vitality of this tradition at close range.

A City, A Living Heritage

Chaozhou, long celebrated as a center of Chinese ceramic craftsmanship, holds a distinctive cultural history. Traditional techniques such as blue-and-white porcelain and painted ceramics embody the region’s unique cultural identity and Eastern aesthetics, and form a living part of Chaozhou’s intangible cultural heritage that continues to develop and transmit across generations.

Rooted in Chaozhou, P&T Royal Ware has been dedicated to the ceramics industry since 1982. Over more than four decades, P&T Royal Ware has continued to preserve traditional porcelain craftsmanship while incorporating contemporary design, research and development, manufacturing, and applications in the international hospitality and foodservice industry — carrying traditional ceramic artistry beyond historical heritage into contemporary life and onto dining tables around the world.

A Piece of Porcelain, A Touch of Traditional Craftsmanship

During the visit and sharing sessions, the students explored the history and cultural heritage of Chaozhou porcelain, gaining a deeper understanding of how traditional ceramic craftsmanship continues to find new expression through contemporary product design, dining experiences, and cultural communication.

During the porcelain-panel painting experience, the students picked up their brushes and created their own blue-and-white patterns on porcelain panels. Moving from observing a piece of porcelain to actively participating in its creation — and from learning a traditional technique to feeling the relationship between brushwork and the porcelain surface — the students were able to see, touch, and engage with traditional craftsmanship in a tangible way.

Bringing Tradition into Contemporary Life

How can traditional culture truly connect with younger generations? Perhaps the answer is not simply to tell stories about the past, but to create meaningful connections between tradition and contemporary life.

At P&T Royal Ware, porcelain is more than a traditional craft — it is an object that participates in everyday life. From a cup of tea and a shared meal to hotels, restaurants, and dining tables across cultures, ceramics continue to connect food, aesthetics, culture, and people.

When traditional craftsmanship is no longer only observed but can be used, experienced, and reimagined, traditional culture gains the potential to keep evolving. From the craftsmanship behind a single piece of porcelain to contemporary design, research and development, manufacturing, hospitality applications, and international markets, the students saw how Chaozhou ceramics expand between heritage and industry — keeping an ancient craft relevant in contemporary life.

A Dining Table Where Cultures Meet

To conclude the experience, P&T Royal Ware prepared authentic Neapolitan pizza, a UNESCO-recognized culinary heritage, together with Chaozhou specialties, tea, and refreshments. Young people from different countries and regions gathered around the same table, sharing cultural experiences through relaxed dining and conversation.

A piece of porcelain, a cup of tea, and a shared meal can naturally bring people closer. For P&T Royal Ware, tableware has never been merely a vessel for serving food — it is a medium that carries dining culture, aesthetics, emotions, and memories, connecting both dishes and people from different cultural backgrounds.

From a single piece of porcelain in Chaozhou to dining tables around the world, cultural exchange happens naturally through experience, understanding, and meaningful interaction. The visit of the Sun Yat-sen University international student representatives to P&T Royal Ware was more than a study experience in intangible cultural heritage — it built a genuine connection between young people from around the world and Chaozhou culture. They painted blue-and-white patterns by hand, experienced ceramic craftsmanship, and carried their own memories of the city back to different parts of the world.

We have always believed that the true vitality of tradition lies in its ability to be seen, understood, and reinterpreted by each new generation.

Looking ahead, P&T Royal Ware will continue to use ceramics as a cultural bridge, connecting Chaozhou with the world and bringing new vitality to Eastern ceramic artistry through contemporary life, global dining tables, and cross-cultural exchange.
