When Lao Friends Write ‘Hello, China’: Chaozhou Blue-and-White Porcelain Finds a New Echo

From September 7 to 11, the “Laos Meets China” international communication program brought a delegation of Lao representatives to China for cultural exchange. Centered on strengthening friendship and exchanges among young people in China and Laos and sharing stories of Chinese civilization with Southeast Asia, the program explored new ways to deepen cultural understanding and connection.

Haizhu District in Guangzhou, an important home of Lingnan culture, was one of the stops on their journey and a window through which Chinese culture was shared with international visitors.

When the visitors arrived at the P&T Royal Ware (PITO) showroom, a welcome message was already glowing on the screen: “Warmly Welcoming the Delegation of the ‘Laos Meets China’ International Communication Program.”

From Canton Tower and Guangzhou’s cityscape to its modern urban life and intangible cultural heritage workshops, the Lao delegation experienced different sides of the city. At P&T Royal Ware (PITO), their journey found a quiet moment of connection in the blue and white of Chaozhou porcelain.

One Blue-and-White Tradition: From Chaozhou Kilns to Contemporary Tableware

Inside the showroom, blue-and-white porcelain pieces were quietly displayed behind glass. The Lao visitors leaned closer, listening as they learned about the story and heritage of Chaozhou blue-and-white porcelain.

Chaozhou has a long cultural history and a deep tradition of ceramic craftsmanship. Blue-and-white porcelain and other traditional ceramic techniques carry a distinctive local heritage and a form of Eastern aesthetics, while remaining an important part of the continuing evolution of Chaozhou’s ceramic culture.

Rooted in Chaozhou, P&T Royal Ware (PITO) has been dedicated to the ceramic industry since 1982. Over more than four decades, the brand has continued to preserve traditional craftsmanship while bringing together contemporary design, research and development, manufacturing, and applications for the international hospitality and foodservice industry.

In this way, traditional ceramic artistry moves beyond its historical roots into contemporary life and onto dining tables around the world.

The visitors raised their phones and cameras as they explored the collection. Blue-and-white lotus scrolls and landscape patterns captured their attention through the glass. Separated by thousands of kilometers and a national border, the familiar language of porcelain still found a way to connect people.

Three World Expos: Bringing Intangible Cultural Heritage to the World

The conversation became even more engaging when the World Expo came into focus.

From the China Pavilion at the 2017 Astana World Expo to Guangdong Week at Expo 2025 Osaka, P&T Royal Ware (PITO) has participated in three World Expos, presenting the beauty of Chaozhou blue-and-white porcelain as part of China’s ceramic heritage to an international audience. Today, P&T Royal Ware (PITO) products reach more than 100 countries and regions around the world.

For P&T Royal Ware (PITO), bringing intangible cultural heritage beyond China is not simply a slogan. It has meant exhibition booths traveled across borders, demonstrations shared across languages, and traditional craftsmanship meeting new audiences around the world.

“Intangible cultural heritage” is often associated with something ancient or distant. But P&T Royal Ware (PITO)’s experience across three World Expos shows something different: cultural heritage with real vitality never turns away from a new audience.

Curiosity in the Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop

After visiting the showroom, the delegation showed strong interest in P&T Royal Ware (PITO) intangible cultural heritage workshop.

What they wanted to see was the invisible craftsmanship behind each piece of porcelain: how clay is shaped into a vessel, how cobalt blue moves across the brush, and how many steps a piece of blue-and-white porcelain passes through before becoming a finished work.

Their curiosity was perhaps more powerful than any formal explanation. When visitors from afar begin asking, “How is it made?”, a connection with the culture has already begun.

As the visit came to an end, one Lao guest picked up a pen and carefully wrote a line in Lao.

The translator softly read out its meaning:

“Hello, China.”

Two words, expressed in another language, suddenly carried a different weight.

It was not a diplomatic phrase or an item on an itinerary. It was a sincere greeting from someone who had just experienced the showroom, listened to stories from the workshop, and discovered a small connection with a culture thousands of kilometers away.

The fires of Chaozhou’s kilns have burned for generations, and they will continue to burn.

And this simple “Hello, China” written in Lao may become, alongside countless moments of curiosity inspired by blue-and-white porcelain, a small and warm footnote in the journey of intangible cultural heritage reaching the world.
